Empowering woman for 39 years and counting.
I had the privilege of touring Wilma’s Transition Society’s stage 3 housing P’esk’a La:lem with Executive Director Tammy Desrochers, an inspiring space that continues their decades-long commitment to safety, empowerment, and healing. Thank you Tammy for taking the time and showing me this beautiful building and for the meaningful conversation. It was wonderful to connect and discuss the important work happening here in our community.
Founded in 1989 as the Xolhemet Society by Wilma Mussell, this non-profit has supported women and children escaping interpersonal violence for over 30 years. From emergency shelter to second and third housing, Wilma’s provides safe spaces, advocacy, outreach, and no-cost counselling for families across B.C.
Their vision is clear – to end interpersonal violence through empowerment and independence. Rooted in inclusivity and cultural respect, they welcome all women and individuals along with their dependents.
It’s powerful to see the impact of community-driven, culturally grounded services right here on Stó:lō territory.
